While the competition tended to favour an angular look, Jaguar opted for a particularly elegant design. This 2+2 GT gave the brand an injection of youthfulness. This was undoubtedly a true Jaguar, from the very vertical dashboard, with its premium wood veneer, and the seats, which offered a high level of comfort.

At its launch in 1996, Jaguar fitted the XK8 with a 4-litre V8 engine that produced 294bhp. Hot on its heels came the XK8 convertible and the XKR. The latter used the same V8 engine but it was supercharged to produce 375bhp. The XKR coupe was easily recognisable, thanks to its more pointed front end, featuring a special radiator grille and lateral bonnet vents.

In 2002, the XK was restyled, with a number of very small touches. It was quite difficult to modify such flowing lines, so it was on the technical side that the XK was modified the most.

The naturally aspirated 4-litre V8 engine was boosted to 4.2 litres, giving the XK 304bhp and a 0 – 62mph time of 6.6 seconds. The XKR’s supercharged V8 went from 375 to 406bhp, with acceleration 0 – 62mph in just 5.6 seconds.

But the most distinctive thing about this version of the XKR was the exceptional sound of its supercharged V8, which resembled more the sounds on a US highway than an English country lane. Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) was fitted as standard, giving the car excellent handling. From 1996 to 2005, more than 90,000 XK8 variants were sold worldwide.
